Lois M. Akers, 87, Fargo, ND, died Monday, July 2, 2012, in Bethany Retirement Living, Fargo.
Lois Mae Nelson, daughter of George and Alma (Bjerken) Nelson, was born August 3, 1924, in Fargo. She grew up in Moorhead, MN, and graduated from Moorhead High School in 1942.
While in school, Lois was active in school plays and declamation. She loved music and played violin, drums, and French horn. She was a competitive swimmer and speed skater. In 1942, she won a gold medal for skating at the Fargo Jaycees Jack Frost Winter Festival. Because of the war, she did not receive her medal at that time, but in 2004, the Fargo Jaycees presented that gold medal to her.
In 1945, Lois married Merlyn Akers from Glyndon, MN, and they began their farm life together. In 1947, they moved to their farm west of Barnesville, MN, where they raised their family. Lois loved the outdoors, raising a large garden full of vegetables, fruit trees and beautiful flowers. If there had been a Food Network back then, she would have been the star. She was well known for her cinnamon rolls, cookies, and homemade everything. She was an avid bowler, winning many trophies at the Barnesville bowling alley.
Lois and Merlyn retired on their farmstead. Merlyn died in 1977. After his death, Lois continued to live on the farm until the late 1980s, when she moved to Moorhead.
Lois is survived by her children, Colleen (Ken) Vollmers, Hudson, WI, Rita (Richard) Dickelman, Moorhead, Larry (Cara) Akers, Moorhead, and Lance (Peggy) Akers, Pelican Rapids, MN; seven grandchildren, Nathan and Jonathan Vollmers, Ryan (Kyla) and Rustin
Memorials preferred to Hospice of the Red River Valley.
