Lonny M. Barnum, 76, Moorhead, MN, passed away on March 28, 2025, at Essentia Health in Fargo, ND.
Lonny was born on August 7, 1948, in Breckenridge, MN to Cyril and Sybil (Hardie) Barnum. He grew up in the FM area, graduating from Moorhead Senior High in 1967.
He furthered his education at the University of Minnesota - Morris for two years, during which he showcased his athletic talents by playing football. He later returned to higher education, completing his bachelor’s degree in teaching from Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) in 1988. During his time at MSUM, he also pursued wrestling, reflecting his competitive spirit and love of sports.
Throughout his career, Lonny had many different jobs in sales and lived in several states during his working career and eventually ended up moving closer to home driving semi for Lewis Truck Lines. He was proud when he became an owner/operator over the road truck driver until his retirement.
Lonny's achievements extended far beyond his professional life. He was proud of becoming the United States arm wrestling champion for his class in the 1970s, triumphing in regional and state competitions before winning the national title. His passion for music flourished through his involvement in bands, including "Let er Buck" and "Brothers," which he formed with his brother, Jerry.
Lonny was known for his loving nature as a parent, devoted spouse, and loyal friend. He had a remarkable sense of humor and quick wit, which made him a natural entertainer, endearing him to all who crossed his path. You could play a song for three seconds and he would be able to tell you the song and artist. His ability to tell jokes and mimic voices had people falling in laughter. His leisure pursuits—fishing, golfing, billiards, bowling, poker, and pinnacle—where just a few of the hobbies he enjoyed. His favorite spot in the summer was at the lake. Most importantly, he loved his family and cherished spending time with children, whether they were his own or the kids of friends. Through all of life’s ups and downs, Lonny loved and followed the Lord, and his Faith remained steadfast.
Lonny is survived by his partner in life, Lorie Baum; his children, Jason (Julie) Barnum, Spencer Barnum, Annie (Adam) Schwichtenberg; stepchildren, Missy Enslow, Tara Dittmer, and Chase David Gilbertson; his grandson, Benjamin Schwichtenberg; his siblings, Pam Keenan, Jerry (Deb) Barnum; sister-in-law, Lynne Barnum; nieces and nephews, Tami (Scott) Moen, Shannon (Jim) Christl, Tori (Traci) Barnum, Hali (Chris) Probert, Shawn Keenan, Jessie (Randy) Alexander, Justin Miles (Abigail) Barnum, Michael Barnum, Aaron Barnum and Christian Barnum; and many great-nieces and great-nephews whom he loved very much.
