Lorraine Loock Thompson

April 11, 1930 — November 17, 2015

Lorraine M. Thompson, 85, passed away after a long valiant battle with cancer during the early hours of November 17, 2015, with family at her side. She was a resident of Bethany Homes on University, Fargo, ND, for the past five years.
Lorraine Marie Loock, the eldest of five children, was born April 11, 1930, in Parshall, ND, to Herman "Peter" and Esther Loock. She was baptized and confirmed in the German Lutheran Faith.
As a young girl the family left the Parshall area and moved to a farm in rural Clay County near Downer, MN. She and her younger sister, Vivian, left the farm to seek work in Moorhead, MN. Her first job was at Cass Clay Creamery as an egg candler. It was in Moorhead where she met Kenneth E. Thompson at the wedding of Kenny's cousin, Doty, to Ordean Matson.
Kenny and Lorraine were married November 5, 1949, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Moorhead. From this union, four children were born Keith, Brian, Hollis, and Shawn. They made their home in Moorhead but later moved to California to be near Kenny's parents. After a short period of time, they returned to Moorhead and later built a home on the Red River south of Fargo where they lived for twenty-five years. Lorraine and Kenny were married for fifty years and during those years visited Hawaii, Mexico, Alaska, England, Scotland, Wales, and Monte Carlo. Later, Lorraine visited China with her daughter Shawn.
Lorraine retired after a long career with J.C. Penney, having most recently worked as a consultant in their home decorating department. After retirement, Lorraine did volunteer work with Hospice, Meals on Wheels, Salvation Army, and at Atonement Lutheran Church.
Lorraine is survived by one son, Keith (Robin) Thompson, Lake Eunice, MN; two daughters, Hollis (Wickham) Corwin, Fargo, and Shawn (Ron) Haines, Chanhassen, MN; nine grandchildren, Jessica Thompson, Alyssa (Randy) Himle, Wesley Thompson, Blythe (Eric) Peterson, Paige (Tom) Norton, Lane Thompson, Johnathon (Megan) Rademacher, Charles and Tanner Haines; nine great-grandchildren, Seth Thompson, Lillyan Thompson, Jensen Himle, Emeline Peterson, Solomon Peterson, William Norton, Evelyn Norton, Gary Norton, and Caden Rademacher; one brother, Louis (Martha) Loock, Lakeland, FL; two sisters, Arlene Bratland, and Elaine (James) Ebsen, Fargo; daughters-in-law, Myrna Thompson and Jane St. Germain; sister-in-law, Nancy Weiler; and brother-in-law, Duane Sherman.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Esther Loock; husband, Kenneth; son, Brian; sister, Vivian Johnk; mother and father-in law, Pearl and Ole Thompson; brothers-in-law, Ralph Johnk, Benjamin Bratland, Robert Thompson, and Jim Weiler; sisters-in-law, Lois Sherman and Shirley Thompson.
As per Lorraine's request, there will be no memorial service. In hopes that there will someday be a cure for CJD (Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease), which took the life of her son, Brian, she generously donated her body to the University of North Dakota Medical School. Upon return of her remains, she will be buried alongside her husband at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family would like to thank the staff at Bethany Homes on University for the care they gave Lorraine.
Memorials can be sent to the American Cancer Society of Fargo (m.cancer.org/involved/donate/memorialgiving/memorial-giving) or CJD Foundation (www.cjdfoundation.org/donate) in Lorraine's name. Sympathy cards may be sent to Shawn Haines, 7340 Kurvers Point Rd, Chanhassen, MN 55317.
