Lucille Malen, daughter of Olive (Opheim) and Nils Larson, was born on October 27, 1913, in Hendrum, MN. She married Harold Malen on October 27, 1933. They farmed near Gardner, ND, for many years and moved to Fargo, ND, in 1998. Lucille passed on November 26, 2013, at Bethany on 42nd, Fargo, just one month after celebrating her 100th birthday with family and friends.
Lucille was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. A woman of many talents, she was well known as the "nurse on call" because of her willingness and ability to offer family and friends assistance and support, especially during times of illness, injury and/or crises. Lu taught herself to sing beautifully in both English and Norwegian and responded to countless calls to be a soloist for funerals, church services, ALCW conventions and other special occasions. Lu's family and friends enjoyed listening to her play the organ which she mastered on her own. She was a knitter, a crocheter and a needlework artist who could fill a gallery with the pictures, afghans and sweaters she made.
In addition Lu was an excellent cook and baker. For a period of time, Lu was an Avon sales representative who enjoyed having coffee and conversations with those she called on and giving out free samples of Avon products. She also enjoyed serving her community. Lu loved helping organize Noble school carnivals and getting old and young alike involved in 4-H picnics and parties. She was a member of the Nora Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School and Bible School and directed the singing for both Sunday School and Bible School programs.
A woman of remarkable strength, Lu taught her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren about those all-important intangibles--gumption, grit, compassion, ingenuity, courage, perseverance, resilience-and so much more. She was a wise woman with a quick wit, a great sense of humor, a knack for telling stories, a keen mind, a strong will and a good heart. Lu will be loved and remembered forever.
Lu is survived by her daughters, Sharon Cobb, Fargo, Kathy (Jack) Stanton, San Diego, CA, and Betty Malen, Annapolis, MD; her grandchildren, Tom (Sally) Wold, John (Alexandra) Wold, Jim Wold, Cindy Cobb Olson, Michael Cobb, Eric (Jacque) Stanton; and her great grandchildren, Glenda Wold, John Zachary and Justin Wold, Miko, Ava and Liselle Olson, and Teylor Lucille and Aaryn Isabella Toribio Stanton.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her daughter, Avis Wold; her grandson, Aaron Stanton; and her siblings, Arnett, John, Martha, Obed; and her infant sister Lucille.
