Mabel Evangeline Johnson, 97, passed away Saturday, August 4, 2018 at Elim Rehab and Care Center in Fargo, ND after a long life of serving God and others. She was born in Northwood, ND, to Olaus and Cecilia (Levorson) Johnson on September 30, 1920. Mabel was baptized and confirmed at the United Lutheran Church and graduated from Northwood High School.
For three years she was employed as a telephone operator at "Central" in Northwood. After attending Concordia College in Moorhead, MN for a year, she completed nurses training through the Women's Army Cadet Corps at the Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Grand Forks, ND. She later graduated from the Lutheran Bible Institute (LBI) in Minneapolis, MN.
Her work as a nurse included jobs in Minneapolis, MN, Northwood, ND, Grafton, ND, and Fargo, ND. Nursing was also part of her work when she teamed up with friend Eula Mae Swenson and went as a missionary to the Navajo Indians at Rock Point in northern Arizona.
While waiting for a painful broken leg to heal, she took a "temporary" position as a secretary in the office of Oak Grove Lutheran High School, Fargo, ND. As it turned out, she stayed twenty-five years and retired from there. In her retirement years, much of her time was spent bringing blessings to others.
Mabel was a very active member of St. Paul's Free Lutheran Church, Fargo, ND, where she was one of the charter members.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Joyce, Seymore (Ruth), and Melvin; sisters, Clara (Clarence) Ostlie, six-year-old Mabel, and infant, Janette; nephews Dwane Ostlie, and Keith Johnson; and special friend and co-worker, Eula Mae Swenson.
She is survived by nephew, Jay (Cheryl) Ostlie, of Littleton, CO, and Cheryl's children, Christopher Valentine, Erin Valentine, and Jennifer (Don) Cheshek; niece, Marjorie (Daryl) Rahfeldt of Elgin, IL, and their daughters, Emily Rahfeldt, and Gretchen (Rafael) Arellanos, and daughter, Violet, all of Streamwood, IL; niece, Sandra (Greg) Olson of Dent, MN, and their son, Kevin (Karina) Olson, and daughter Claire of Fargo, ND; and their daughter, Angie (Jeremy) Berg, and daughters Damaris, Gracia, Solveig, and Nia, and son Hans, of Bemidji, MN.
