Marcell "Marty" Wergeland
February 22, 1927 — November 20, 2019
Marcell "Marty" Wergeland, 92, of Moorhead, MN, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 20, 2019, in Eventide on Eighth, Moorhead.
Marcell Elaine Schonberger was born February 22, 1927, the daughter of Roman and Lora (Groth) Schonberger, in Buffalo, ND. She graduated from Wheatland (ND) High School as the valedictorian. Marty then completed her undergraduate degree from Valley City State College, Valley City, ND, and did graduate work at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, and Moorhead State University.
On December 21, 1947, Marty was united in marriage to Howard Wergeland in Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley City, at a double wedding with her twin sister, Arzell and her husband, Chuck Solheim. Before retiring from teaching at Jefferson School in Fargo, ND, she taught elementary grades in Sanborn, ND, and Gardner, ND. She also coached girls' basketball in Sanborn.
Marty and Howard spent their retirements years at Pelican Lake, MN, and Fountain of the Sun, AZ, before moving to Moorhead.
Marty is survived by her husband, Howard, Eventide Linden Tree Circle, Moorhead; son, Mark and daughter-in-law, Diane, Pelican Lake, MN; grandsons and their wives, Bryce and Teri, Deephaven, MN, Brett and Laura, West St. Paul, MN, and Blake and Mari, Oslo, Norway; great-grandsons, Harrison and Johannes; and several nieces and nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Ione (Vernal) Anderson, Arzell (Chuck) Solhiem, and Dolly (Grant) McKay; and brother, Don Schonberger.
Marty's family wishes to thank the staff at Eventide for their loving and gracious care over these several months.
Memorials may be directed to Streed Commons at Eventide on Eighth.
A Gathering of Friends for Marty will be one prior to her service.
Her Life Celebration Service will be Sunday, December 1, 2019, at 2 PM in Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Moorhead.
Burial will take place in Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes, MN.
