Marcella J. Smith

Marcella J. Smith, 88, of Moorhead, MN, died Friday, September 12, 2014, in Essentia Health in Fargo, ND.

Marcella Jane Gilbertson was born August 25, 1926, the daughter of Cornelius and Amanda (Stole) Gilbertson, in Bethesda Hospital in Crookston, MN, where she was baptized. She was raised on a farm near Halstad, MN. Marcella was confirmed at West Marsh River Lutheran Church, rural Halstad, and received her education at Halstad Public School, graduating in 1944.

On June 22, 1949, she was united in marriage to Harold J. Smith in Ada, MN. They had four children. They moved to Argyle, MN, in 1956 where they owned and operated Smith's Locker Plant. In 1965, Marcella and Harold moved to Moorhead where she provided daycare until retiring around 1990.

She was a member of The Lutheran Church of Christ The King and their ladies aide.

Marcella loved to cook and bake and no one ever stopped by without having coffee and cookies. She enjoyed caring for her flower gardens. Most importantly, Marcella's greatest joy was her family.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Harold; daughter, Kristi (Kevin) Vette, Rochester, MN, two sons, Kevin (Missy Nord) Smith, Rothsay, MN, and Scott Smith, Burnsville, MN; grandchildren, BJ (Stefanie) Vette, Brian Vette, Allison (Ben) Svobodny, Angela (Chad) Baldwin, Andrew Smith, Kellsey, Kendra and Lucas Nord; great-grandchildren, Carson and Miles Vette, Stuart and Ruth Svobodny, Colton and Taylor Boone, and Annabelle Baldwin.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Susan; daughter-in-law, Patti Smith; and sister, Donna Mae Westcott.

A gathering of friends for Marcella will be Monday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, with a prayer service at 6:30 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

Her memorial service will be Tuesday, September 16, 2014, at 10:30 AM in The Lutheran Church of Christ the King, Moorhead.

Interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Moorhead.
