Marilyn J. Larson, 64, Moorhead, MN, formerly of Detroit Lakes, MN, died Sunday February 16, 2014, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Moorhead.
Born on March 13, 1949, at Grand Forks, ND, Marilyn was the youngest daughter of Andy and Virginia "Peg" (Quale) Larson of Hallock, MN, where she was raised.
She received a special education degree from Moorhead State University (MSUM) and began a long teaching career; first in Tracy, MN, where she also coached girls' basketball, and later at Moorhead Senior High School. Her students were like family to her and her life's theme became "you can do it."
Shortly after completing cancer treatment, Marilyn retired from teaching in 2004, to her home on Little Detroit Lake. There she welcomed everyone to come and enjoy it with her. Her focus was always on encouraging, serving and giving. Her dedication to others could be witnessed through her interactions with her students, her church and community, and her family.
In July, 2012, Marilyn moved to Fairmont Assisted Living, Moorhead, due to health issues and shortly afterwards entered Eventide Lutheran Home. In spite of continuing challenges, she enjoyed laughing and making new friends.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; infant twin sisters; and her brothers-in-law, Gary Cameron and Bill Braun.
She is survived by three sisters, Virginia (Byron) Danielson, Fargo, Kathy Braun, Mandan, ND, and Angie Cameron, Detroit Lakes; nine nieces and nephews; and extended family.
The family would like to convey a special thank you to the staff at Eventide for their compassionate care and thoughtfulness.
Visitation will begin at 3:30 PM, on Saturday February 22, 2014, at First Lutheran Church, 912 Lake Avenue in Detroit Lakes, MN, followed by a memorial service at 4:30 PM.
Memorials may be given to the charity of the donor's choice.
