rural Sabin, MN

Mark Steven Kava graced the world with his vibrant presence from October 21, 1970, until his sudden passing on October 12, 2024. Born at St. Ansgar Hospital in Moorhead, Minnesota, he was the sixth of seven children to Edward “Duke” and Nancy Kava. He grew up on a farm in rural Wilkin County.

His early education began at Assumption Catholic School, before he moved to Atkinson Elementary School, and eventually, Barnesville High School. There, his teenage years came alive—filled with football glory, wrestling determination, track aspirations, and wisdom gleaned as a member of the Knowledge Bowl and FFA. He graduated with the class of 1989.

Mark’s sense of duty led him to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Air Force for a decade. His journey took him to Texas for basic training and beyond, spanning to places including Colorado Springs, Korea, and Maryland. During his service, he cultivated his passion for technology, furthering his education at the Community College of the Air Force.

Upon his return to Minnesota, Mark seamlessly transitioned into a career in the banking and IT sectors, where his keen intellect shone brightly. Shortly after his return, he met his beloved wife, Connie Capp. They exchanged vows on a beautiful day, May 4, 2002. Together, they forged a loving life, beginning in Barnesville, venturing to Omaha for a year, and ultimately returning to their cherished Minnesota roots.

In recent years, Mark worked at High Point Networking, relishing the camaraderie of poker nights and casino adventures alongside friends. Mark's eclectic taste in music made every gathering a celebration, as he effortlessly challenged loved ones to guess melodies and artists. He was a devoted arcade gamer, bringing the nostalgia of the '80s alive with his treasured collection of game cabinets.

Mark was community and faith oriented and spent countless hours volunteering with the Knights of Columbus and Assumption Catholic Church where he held many offices including the Finance Council and as a Finance Council Trustee. He volunteered with the crew at Rollag during the Steam Threshers Reunion and the FargoDome. He was also a member of the American Legion and honored many veterans’ service to their country in the Honor Guard. He served on the Barnesville Area Community Fund as a member and officer.

Mark enjoyed spending time with his extended family, creating unforgettable memories at their yearly lakeside retreat. He wore the title of “cool uncle” with pride, always ready with the latest gadgets. His passion extended beyond gaming; Mark captured the beauty of nature through his love of photography, especially the planets, stars, and breathtaking northern lights and his high-tech telescope helped achieve this.

An unapologetic movie enthusiast, he could recite lines from his favorite films and brought laughter to many with his keen sense of humor. His loyalty to the Minnesota Vikings made him a familiar sight as an armchair quarterback, ever ready to discuss the latest game.

He is survived by his wife Connie Kava, mother Nancy Kava, six siblings Carla (Larry) Hunt, Ruth (Todd) Affield, Karen (Jesse) Norman, Ed (Mary) Kava, Paula Kava, Rob (Stephanie) Kava, father in law John (Jane Kolstoe) Capp, brother in law Brian Capp, sister in law Sharon (Rick) Lee, brother in law Anthony (Julie) Capp, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his dad Edward “Duke” Kava, brother Chuck Kava, mother-in-law Janie Capp, and brother in law Brad Capp.

Mark's life may have been cut short by a brain tumor, but his spirit remains ever-present in the hearts of those who loved him. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth, laughter, and innumerable cherished memories. In celebrating the life of Mark Steven Kava, we honor a remarkable man who lived fully, loved deeply.
