Mary Arvold

January 9, 1925 — January 24, 2013

Mary C. Arvold, 88, Fargo, ND, died Thursday, January 24, 2013, at Bethany Retirement Living on South University in Fargo.

Mary Carolyn Arvold was born in Fargo, on January 9, 1925, into the family of Alfred G. and Mildred Tolles Arvold and brother, A. Mason. The children were baptized at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Whitewater, Wisconsin, their father's hometown.

Mary attended Horace Mann Elementary, Roosevelt Junior High and Central High before entering NDAC in 1942. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma and was honored in 2008 for sixty-five years of association with the sorority.

After completing a B.S. in Home Economics in 1946, she began her professional career in food service in New York City; first as food supervisor and kitchen manager at Columbia University dining halls then planning and food supervisor at Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research.

When Mary returned to Fargo to assist her parents, she served as supervisor and manager of St. Luke's Hospital Food Service and finished her career at Villa Maria Nursing Home. In retirement, Mary worked as a volunteer with RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) and the Convention and Visitors Bureau information center at Hector Airport.

Mary maintained lifelong associations with her dearest friends. She enjoyed travel, collecting stamps and international dolls, interests that began with a family trip to Europe in 1930. Mary was an enthusiast of dance performances throughout her life. "Beauty is that which gives us pleasure when we behold it."

Mary was preceded in death by her brother, Mason (2000); and sisters-in-law, Frances "Frannie" Bettschen Arvold (1992) and Janet Bell Arvold (2010).

A memorial celebration of Mary's life will be held at a future date. Memorial gifts may be directed to the Alfred G. Arvold Theatre Scholarship at NDSU Development Foundation.
