Mary F. Johnson of Moorhead, MN, died Tuesday, June 26, 2012, in Elim Rehab and Care Center, Fargo, ND, at the age of 79.
Mary Francis Smyth, daughter of James and Mary Elizabeth (Collins) Smyth, was born in Armagh, Northern Ireland, on June 4, 1933. She grew up and received her education in Northern Ireland. As a young lady, she moved to England, where she met Vernon Johnson, a serviceman in the US Air Force. They were married in Armagh Cathedral on August 17, 1957.
Mary and Vernon came to the US, and lived in Rapid City, SD, for a short period of time, prior to making their home in Silver Bay, MN. In 1973, the family moved to Moorhead, where they have lived since. In Moorhead, Mary worked in food service at North Junior High School and St. Ansgar Hospital. She also served at St. John's Hospital and Dakota Hospital, both in Fargo, prior to her retirement in 2002.
Mary enjoyed Irish music, camping with her family, knitting, cooking, and baking, especially her chocolate chip cookies. She adored her three grandsons.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sheila; a son, Lester, who died in 2000; her parents; and a brother, Patrick John Smyth. She is survived by her husband, Vernon, a resident of Elim Rehab and Care Center, Fargo; a son, Anthony Johnson, Moorhead; a daughter, Veronica (Heath) Lunde, Sartell, MN; grandsons, Darin, Tony, and Connor Lunde; sisters, Kathleen "Kit" Blacklaws, Evelyn (Tony) Johnson, and Sheila Welch; and brothers, James and Joe Smyth.
Visitation: Friday, 5 PM to 7 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM, St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Moorhead.
Funeral: Saturday, June 30, 2012, at 11 AM, St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Moorhead.
