Mavis L. Holmberg, 88, Hillsboro, ND, formerly of Fargo, ND, died Wednesday, June 15, 2011, in the Hillsboro Nursing Home under the care of Hospice.
Mavis Lenore Melhus was born May 5, 1923, in Minneapolis, MN, to Louis and Helen (Borgen) Melhus. She grew up in rural Blanchard, ND, and graduated from high school in Mayville, ND.
Mavis married Donald J. Nelson and they made their home in the Mayville area where Mavis worked various jobs. On July 23, 1953, Mavis married Willard Holmberg and they lived in rural Buxton, ND, Mayville, and Minneapolis. They eventually moved to Fargo after their retirement. While living in Mayville, Mavis worked at Luther Memorial Home and in Minneapolis, she worked as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell.
Mavis and Willard became residents at Bethany Retirement Living, Fargo, in 1997. Willard died in October of 2000, and Mavis continued to make her home at Bethany until 2008, when she moved to Hillsboro and became a resident at the Hillsboro Nursing Home.
While in Fargo, Mavis was a member of St. Paul's Free Lutheran Church. She especially enjoyed Bible study.
Mavis enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, playing Scrabble and cards, and watching Wheel of Fortune. She also made many different crafts and enjoyed animals and wildlife.
Mavis loved to cook and bake and was known for her excellent butterscotch meringue
She is survived by five children, Donna (Ronnie) Harstad, Cummings, ND, Larry (Peg) Nelson, Lisle, IL, Len (Linda) Nelson, Moorhead, Deborah Lopez, Minneapolis, and Laura (Davey) Miller, Hillsboro; a brother, Lynn (Caroline) Melhus, Fargo; sisters-in-law,
Memorials preferred to St. Paul's Free Lutheran Church, Fargo, Hillsboro Nursing Home, or Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Funeral Service: Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at 2 PM at Korsmo Funeral Service, Moorhead, with a Visitation one hour prior to the funeral service. A Memorial Service will also be held on Monday, June 20th at the Hillsboro Nursing Home at 1 PM.
Interment: Springvale Cemetery, Fargo.
