Melbert Eidsmoe

Melbert J. "Mel" Eidsmoe, 84, Moorhead, MN, died on Tuesday, June 1, 2010, at Bethany Retirement Living, Fargo, ND.

Mel was born in Dickinson, ND, on March 2, 1926, to Clifford and Irene (Nelson) Eidsmoe. He grew up in Timmer, ND, until his family moved to Ada-Borup, MN, in 1939. Mel graduated from Ada High School in 1943. He was a self taught string bass musician. After graduation he started playing for Wen Schuh and George Schoen Orchestras.

Mel married Jean Haugstad on June 15, 1947. They moved to Minneapolis, MN, where Mel attended the Gale Institute (railroad school). Mel worked as a Station Agent for the Great Northern/Burlington Northern Railroad for 37 years, retiring in 1985, and was stationed in Averill, Georgetown, Downer, Bemidji, and Detroit Lakes, MN. During these years Mel continued to play in local orchestras.
Mel joined the Glyndon, MN, Lions Club in 1966 and was elected Governor of the Lions Clubs International from 1973-74 for district 5M-3 (Minnesota). He organized 17 new Lions Clubs in MN and ND.

Frank Scott, formerly from the Lawrence Welk show, approached Mel to play string bass in his local performing group. Mel started the "Mel Eidsmoe Orchestra" in 1983, playing in the Fargo/Moorhead area and retired in the spring of 2000. Twelve of those years he played in the Mesa, AZ, community during the winter.
Mel had numerous interests including oil painting. He enjoyed painting portraits of his children and grandchildren and outdoor scenery.

He is survived by wife of 63 years, Jean; one son, Bruce (Debra); four daughters, Marcy (Jeff) Shoemaker, Detroit Lake, Jan Alswager, Apple Valley, MN, Diane (Bryan) Nordhougen, Fargo, and Carrie (Tyson Caffo), Marina del Ray, CA; 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 5 step grandchildren; and 6 step great-grandchildren.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.


Visitation: Thursday, June 3, 2010, from 5 - 7 PM with a Prayer Service at 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.


Funeral Service: Friday, June 4, 2010, at 10:30 AM, in Bethesda Lutheran Church, 401 40th Ave S, Moorhead.


Burial: Moorhead Memorial Gardens, Moorhead.
