Merl Lee Robertson, age 77, died Friday, April 26, 2013, in Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, MN, where he had been a resident since the end of 2012.
Merl was born June 24, 1935, in Manzanola, CO, the son of Albert and Alice Robertson. He grew up and received his education in Manzanola. In 1953, after his high school graduation, he moved to Rocky Ford, CO, where he worked for American Crystal Sugar.
On Nov. 13, 1956, Merl was married to Darlene Martin. They lived in Rocky Ford until 1976, when Merl was transferred to the American Crystal research facility in Moorhead. He retired from American Crystal in 1993, after 40 years with the company. In retirement, he worked for Tractor Supply Company and Whale of a Wash, both Moorhead.
Merl enjoyed woodworking, and he built gifts for many of his family. He was a chocoholic and relished trips to the Moorhead Dairy Queen for a chocolate shake. Merl was friendly, helpful and outgoing, and had a big heart. He readily visited with whoever was near by. Merl's love of people included being "Santa Claus" for many children, both family, friends and strangers over the years.
Merl is survived by his wife, Darlene, Moorhead; daughters, Sue (Jeff) Winter, Glyndon, MN, and Pam (Rob) Cernik, West Fargo, ND; grandchildren, Melissa (Scott) Matthys, Mitchel Kramer, Tyler Winter, Brad (Chelsey) Winter, Heather Kramer, and Alexis Cernik; great-grandchildren, Joshua, Christopher, and Daniel Matthys, and Brynlee Winter; brothers, Dr. Gerald (Marilyn) Robertson and Tom (Glenda) Robertson; and sisters, Barbara Pruitt, Joyce (Jim) Williams, and Betty (Gene) Glisson.
Merl was preceded in death by a son, Marty, who died in 2008; by his parents; and by two brothers, Bill and Rex.
Visitation: Tuesday, 5 PM to 7 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. Funeral: Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at 11 AM in Grace United Methodist Church, Moorhead. Interment: Riverside Cemetery, Moorhead.
