Michael J. Korsmo

Michael J. Korsmo, 70, Bradenton, FL, formerly of West Fargo, ND, died peacefully on August 27, 2016, in his home surrounded by his family and under hospice care. His death was caused by multiple myeloma, a result of the year in Vietnam.

Michael James Korsmo was born on October 26, 1945, in Valley City, ND, to Albert and Kathleen (Sheehan) Korsmo. He grew up in Valley City and attended St. Catherine's School, Valley City State College, and was graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. He was drafted into the US Army and spent a year in Vietnam where he earned a Purple Heart. His entire career was with the Social Security Administration, the last 20 years with the Office of Hearings and Appeals.

He married Angela Helfter in St. Olaf Catholic Church in Minneapolis, MN, in 1973, and they had four children, Karen, Thomas, Matthew and Anne. They lived in Grand Forks, Bismarck, and West Fargo, ND. After he retired, Mike spent four years as a snowbird; in 2014 they sold their West Fargo home and moved to Bradenton, to enjoy winters without ice and snow.

Mike's spare time was spent with his family and friends. He enjoyed meeting friends for lunch or dinner. He treasured the time spent with his children and extended family members. Summer vacations at Long Lake with his brothers and sisters and their families were a highlight of Mike's year.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Richard, Gerald, Dianne, and Dennis; and niece, Maureen Korsmo LeCompte.

He is survived by his wife, Angela; daughters, Karen, Lakewood Ranch, FL, and Anne (Gerardo) Velasco, Bradenton; sons, Tom (fiancée, Heather Johnson), Highlands Ranch, CO, and Matt (Heidi) and grandson, Thomas, Plattsmouth, NE; sister, Kathleen (Gordon) Lambrecht, Park Rapids, MN; sisters-in-law, Joy Korsmo, Carol Korsmo, and Gail Korsmo; and many nieces and nephews.

The visitation will be Friday, September 16, 2016, from 5 PM to 7 PM with a wake service at 7 PM in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, MN.

The Memorial Mass will be Saturday, September 17, 2016, at 10 AM in Holy Cross Catholic Church in West Fargo.

Mike will be interred in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan at 11 AM on Monday, September 19, 2016.
