Milan Everett Alby was born to Martin and Mildred (Egenes) Alby on July 5, 1938, in Thief River Falls, MN, where he spent his childhood. After graduation from Lincoln High School in 1956, he attended teachers' training and then taught grades 1-8 in a rural school for two years. Milan attended Bottineau (ND) State School of Forestry and earned an AA degree in forestry in 1962. During the summer of 1961, he fought forest fires in Idaho.
After graduation, Milan joined the Peace Corps and spent 2 years in Ecuador teaching forestry techniques. He briefly attended the University of Hawaii in 1964, but then transferred to Bemidji State University, MN, where he earned a BS degree in biology in 1966 and found his wife. Milan married Donna Pikkaraine in Bemidji, on June 17, 1967.
Forever the scholar, he completed his MS degree in entomology at NDSU, Fargo, ND, in 1968, and continued to take classes throughout his lifetime. He joined Oak Grove Lutheran School in 1969 and taught science and computer courses until his retirement in the spring 2005. His classroom was a regular after school retreat for students who enjoyed chess or were looking for an interesting place to hang out. He thrived on being able to help students learn and develop to their full potential.
He loved to fish and to ride his motorcycle. After completing his tour in the Peace Corps, he and his best friend purchased motorcycles in Panama and rode them home. He and Donna also took several long trips on a motorcycle before the children were born. After his children were grown he resumed his riding and, through his encouragement, in the last year, both children earned their motorcycle licenses.
With his family by his side and under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley, Milan died Sunday, November 5, 2006, in his home, at sixty-eight years of age.
Milan is survived by his wife, Donna, Dilworth; two children, Deona (Dino) McEnery, Fargo, and Ryan Alby, Dilworth; and three grandchildren, Chloe, Canaan and Gavin Alby.
The Memorial Service for Milan will be Thursday, November 9, 2006, at 1:00 PM, in First Lutheran Church, Fargo.
