Mildred H. Maharas

November 10, 1919 — November 7, 2009

Mildred H. Maharas, age 89, Moorhead, Minnesota, died peacefully at MeritCare Palliative Care Unit in Fargo, ND, on November 7, 2009.

Mildred Hannah Anderson was born November 10, 1919, at the family farmstead near Hamar, North Dakota, during a blizzard. Her parents were Julius Anderson and Bertha Jacobson. She grew up speaking Norwegian and attended a one-room schoolhouse nearby. She began to learn the English language when the schoolteachers would board at their farmstead. Her high school years were spent at Oak Grove High School in Fargo where she graduated valedictorian at age 16. She went to Augsburg College for one year and then went to Mayville College and also taught in a rural school to earn money for her last two years of college. Mildred did return to Augsburg College and graduated (cum laude) in 1943. She then took a job teaching in Newfolden, Minnesota, where she taught English and business courses.

In 1945, during a visit to her sister in Washington, she decided to visit California. While sending a telegram home at a Western Union station she met her future husband (Virgil) who was in the Merchant Marines. They dated for a short period of time and then she returned to a teaching job in the Iron Range in Minnesota. She then took a teaching position in Forest City, Iowa. She and Virgil met again in Iowa where she was teaching and were married in Algona, Iowa on December 22, 1946. They were married for 61 years.

Mildred was a long-time member of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Moorhead, where she was active in circle and library guild. Mildred enjoyed spending time with her family and many friends. She enjoyed their interesting conversations and was willing to talk about anything. Mildred's family was everything to her. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and she will be missed immensely by everyone.

She is survived by two daughters, Cindy (Lloyd) Perlenfein, Tamarac Lake, near Pelican Rapids, MN, and Joan (Jeff Lopez) Maharas, Austin, TX; two sons, Donald Maharas, Moorhead, and David (Susan Dreier) Maharas, Cozumel, MX.; brother, John (Patty) Anderson, Hamar, ND; 7 grandchildren, Chad (Bert) Perlenfein, Jessica (Randy Hanson) Gnadt, Michael (Ashley Samler) Maharas, Christopher Maharas, Patrick Maharas, Stephanie Maharas and Nicholas Maharas; and 3 great-grandchildren; Samantha Gnadt, Tyler Perlenfein, and Brook Gnadt.
