Milton Madson

August 8, 1936 — April 3, 2016

Milton Leroy Madson, 79, of Fargo, ND, died Sunday, April 3, 2016, in Sanford Health, Fargo.

Milton Leroy Madson, the son of Milton O. and Gladys (Schafer) Madson was born on the family farm near Gardner, ND, on August 8, 1936. He attended school in Noble Township, and in Hendrum, MN, where he graduated from high school in 1954. Leroy attended Concordia College, Moorhead, Bottineau (ND) School of Forestry, and Mayville (ND) State College, where he received both his bachelor's degree and his master's degree.

Leroy dedicated his life to education. He taught 5th and 6th grade, earth science, in Hoople, ND, Bottineau, Ada, MN, and Anchorage, AK, where he was selected as the Alaska Teacher of the Year. He retired in 1987 and returned to the family farm near Gardner. In 2009, he moved into Fargo, where he had lived since. Leroy immersed himself in local and family history, and taught genealogy for the Norwegian Totenlag.

His family called him Leroy to avoid confusion with his father. Others called him Milt. By whatever name, he was known for his love of teaching, classical music, old western movies, bird watching and gardening. He became the family historian and was always happy to help others with their genealogical research. A life-long member of Nora Lutheran Church, Gardner, he served as historian and reader for the parish.

Leroy was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Evelyn Nelson and Karen Olson. He is survived by a sister, Ruth (Larry) McCrank, Mathews, NC; a brother, Roger (Kim) Madson,
Fargo; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials are preferred to Nora Lutheran Church or Nora Cemetery fund, both Gardner.

Funeral service for Milton Leroy Madson will be Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at 2 PM in Nora Lutheran Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral at the Church.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.
