Minor William "Bill" Green was born March 14, 1919, in Lacon, IL, to Charles and Clara (Horner) Green. He was the twelfth of fourteen children. He grew up in Lacon where he attended school and Sunday school at United Methodist Church. He looked forward every year to returning to Lacon to attend the all-class reunion.
Bill was in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), for three years. He served in WW II at Australia, New Caledonia, Guadalcanal and the Philippines. He participated in five beachheads and was only one of two from his company that returned alive.
He married Delores Belsly on September 16, 1945, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Moorhead, MN. They met by mail while he was in the service since the Lacon Home Journal had published names of servicemen to write to. Even though Delores's family lived in Moorhead, their roots were in Lacon, and they received that newspaper. A romance developed and he proposed to her while he was on furlough. They made their home in Moorhead. Delores preceded him in death on June 22, 1982.
He was a carpenter by trade and built their two-story home. Electricity was not available to the lot so the two-story home was completely built with hand tools. Over the years, Bill also worked for Buland Construction, Kvamme Construction, and Don Engebretson Construction. And since carpenters never really retire he was still doing home repairs for others at age 88.
Bill was always physically fit and did his own yard work and snow removal as well as that of his two neighbor ladies up to last year. He also drove the ladies to their appointments through last year.
The highlight of 2007 was when he received his WW II medals, and went on the WW II Honor Flight with his son, Tom, to Washington D.C. In the presence of his family, Bill died Friday, March 21, 2008, at Rosewood on Broadway, Fargo, where he had lived only
He is survived by his four children, Linda Stulz, and Tom Green, both Moorhead, Susan (Jonathon) Hinz, and Scott (Bonnie) Green, both Fargo, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation for Bill will be Tuesday, March 25, 2008, from 5 - 7 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. His funeral, with full military honors, will be Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at 11 AM, at Bethesda L
