Myrtle Nelson

Myrtle Nelson, 95, Fargo, ND, died Monday, February 6, 2012, of natural causes.

Myrtle Christensen was born in Hannaford, ND, on March 22, 1916, and was raised on the family farm in Luverne, ND, one of seven children born to Danish immigrants Christ and Oline Christensen.

She attended high school in Luverne and graduated from Valley City State Teachers College with a degree in elementary education. She married local farmer Harvey Nelson in 1946. Harvey continued to farm and Myrtle worked in the Luverne Public School where she taught more than one generation of children in several of the local families.

Beginning in the 1960's the couple split their time between farming in Luverne and enjoying winter activities in Tucson, AZ. Harvey died in 1985. In 1993, Myrtle married Lester Stephens of Tucson. Lester died in 2007. Myrtle moved to Bethany Towers in Fargo, where she remained until her death.

She was the last of her generation. She was preceded in death by two husbands; her parents; her siblings, Catherine (Christ) Mortensen, Nels Christensen, Bill (Inez) Christensen, Gladys Mortensen, Lillian (Alan) Nelson, and Christy (Shirley) Christensen; and three nephews. She is survived by fourteen nieces and nephews.

Myrtle will be remembered as an intellectual, kind, forward thinking, independent, and loving person with a quiet charm and sophistication.

Her memorial service will be Friday, March 9, 2012, at 2 PM, in Mavis Whiting Chapel, Bethany on University, Fargo.

Inurnment at the Lund cemetery will follow on a nice spring morning, once the ground thaws.
