Norma A. Nygaard, age 88, Detroit Lakes, MN, formerly of Moorhead, MN, died Tuesday, August 5, 2008 in Golden Manor Assisted Living, Detroit Lakes.
Norma Agnes Garrison, the daughter of Ralph and Nora (Gilbertson) Garrison was born Jan. 21, 1920, rural Barnesville, MN, where she grew up and received her education. On April 11, 1939, she was married to Vernon R. Nygaard, in Duluth, MN. Following their marriage, they lived in Hibbing, MN. They lived in a number of places in the tri-state area, while Vernon worked in road construction. They also lived in New Mexico.
In 1972, Norma and Vernon made their home in Dent, MN. In 1983, they moved to Moorhead, where they lived until Vernon died in 1990.
After her husband's death, Norma continued to live in Moorhead. In 2004, she moved to Hawley (MN) Senior Living, and in February of 2008, to Golden Manor, Detroit Lakes.
Norma's Christian faith was very important to her. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Moorhead for many years. Also, she enjoyed doing hand work, such as knitting, and was an excellent cook and baker, of both, Scandinavian delicacies and Mexican food, a skill she acquired while living in New Mexico.
Family was the center of her life. From her earliest years, she always found time to care for and support them. She loved and was loved by all of her family. She is survived by a daughter, VernaLee (William) Riewer, Dent, MN; four sisters, Orpha Kunz, Barnesville, MN, Ruby Dunham, Lake Park, MN, Pearl (Marvin) Everhart, Chewelah, WA, and Celline McReynolds, West Fargo, ND; brothers, Ralph Garrison Jr., Port Orchard, WA, and Norris (Betty) Garrison, Yakima, WA; three grandchildren, Kelly (Lori) O'Brien, Paige Siegert, and Nathan (Pam) O'Brien; and three great-grandchildren, Molly, Adam and Emily Siegert.
Visitation: Thursday, 5 PM to 7 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
Funeral service: Friday, August 8, 2008, at 1 PM in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
Burial: Gran Lutheran Cemetery, rural Hawley, MN.
