Olive Lydia Lower was born March 27, 1911, at home in Felton, MN. She was the second of three children and the only daughter born to Joseph and Mabel (Brantner) Lower. Olive attended school in Felton and Moorhead, MN.
On October 31, 1927, Olive married Herbert W. Gravalin, in Moorhead. In 1928, Olive went to work at the farm of her uncle, Charles Brantner. Later, Olive worked at the Aquarium Bar in Moorhead until 1952. She then worked for the Leo Johnson Furniture Company in Moorhead for twenty-two years until the store closed in 1974. In April 1997, floodwaters forced Olive out of her longtime home in Moorhead. At that time she packed up her beloved schnauzer, Crissy, and went to live in Fargo with her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Gary Shiek. In July of 2003, Olive became a resident of Villa Maria, Fargo. She was loved by fellow residents and staff alike. Olive died February 12, 2007, at Innovis Health, Fargo. She was ninety-five years of age.
Through thick and thin, Olive raised five children on her own. She was a humble woman with a steadfast faith in God. Reflecting back on her life, Olive remarked how proud she was that all five of her children grew up to be fine, contributing adults with families of their own.
