Oscar "Ockie" E. Ostrem

Oscar Emanuel Ostrem, 93, of Moorhead, MN, died Wednesday, December 19, 2007, at Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, where he had been a resident since January 2005.
Oscar was born on October 28, 1914, in Glyndon, MN, to Anna (Larson) and Otto Ostrem. He attended schools in Moorhead and in Fargo, ND, where he graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1932.
He married Helen M. Wangsness on August 25, 1939, in Moorhead, and they had four children. Oscar served in the US Navy from 1943 until 1946. Oscar worked for the US Postal Service in Fargo for thirty-two years. After retirement, he and Helen built a home on Lake Ida, near Cormorant Village in Minnesota, where they lived for nineteen years. In 1996, they moved to Moorhead.
Oscar was well known for his woodworking skills. He enjoyed traveling through all 50 states with Helen, traveling to Sweden to explore his roots and meet relatives there, and traveling about the country to visit his children. Oscar, affectionately known as "Ockie", loved music, played a good game of cards right up to the end of his life, and enjoyed visiting with friends and relatives. He always had a smile for everyone.
Oscar was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings: Leah, Andrew, Bertha, Ernest, Herbert, and Douglas.
Oscar is survived by his wife of sixty-eight years, Helen; children: Marilyn (Ken) Hanson, Detroit Lakes, MN, Jane (Ron) Griffith of Plymouth, MN, Laurie (Don) Kline, Shorewood, MN, and Mark (Patricia) Ostrem of Boston, MA; nine grandchildren, Chris Hans
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 26 at 11:00 AM at Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, Fargo.
Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to donor's choice.
