Oscar Soergel, age 85, Moorhead, MN and formerly of Lake Park, MN, died Thursday in Golden Living Center, Moorhead.
Oscar, the son of Oscar and Mary Soergel, was born in Chicago, IL, on May 5, 1924. He grew up and received his education in Chicago. During WW II, Oscar served in the US Army in Europe. He participated in the D-Day invasion, was later wounded and received both the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals.
On September 20, 1947, Oscar was married to Estelle Wagner. They made their home in the F-M area. In 1977, they moved to rural Lake Park. Oscar worked as a wholesale floorcovering representative. After retiring in 1980, he worked as a self-employed handyman, who was well known to be able to fix just about anything. If he couldn't get a part, he would make it.
His wife, Estelle died on July 6, 1999. In 2008, Oscar returned to Moorhead to live. He enjoyed fishing, and giving treats to staff and visitors at the VA Medical Center, Fargo, and Golden Living Center, where his nickname was the "Candyman".
Oscar is survived by a daughter, Diana Gould, Fargo, ND; son, David (Mary) Soergel in South Korea; sister, Margaret (Eugene) Gordon, Sacramento, CA; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Paul, who died in 1975, and an infant son.
