Pearl Larson

Pearl Johnson Larson, age 97, of Moorhead, MN, died Thursday, December 20, 2012, at Sanford Palliative Care in Fargo, ND.

Pearl was born April 1, 1915, in Moorhead to Emma and Edward Johnson, the youngest of seven children. She was raised on the family farm near Averill, MN, and attended the Averill Elementary School. She was baptized and confirmed at Scandia Lutheran Church. Pearl graduated from Moorhead High School while living with her sister, Ella. She also earned her teaching degree from Moorhead State Teachers College.

She married Leland S. Larson from Borup, MN, in 1934. He was employed by the Great Northern Railroad. His job led them to live in several local towns where Pearl taught school in Aneta and Argusville, ND. Pearl and Leland raised two sons, Leland Jr. and Dennis. The family lived in Moorhead at the time of Leland's death in 1949. Pearl continued her education earning a Master's Degree in Education at Moorhead State College. After teaching a few years in Moorhead, she moved to Minneapolis where she taught mathematics in the Minneapolis Public School for 27 years. She also attended graduate school at the University of Minnesota. Upon her retirement she moved back to Moorhead. She was one of the first residents of Eventide Linden Tree Circle in Moorhead and then recently lived in Eventide Lutheran Home.

As a young woman, Pearl enjoyed singing and dancing. Other favorite activities were traveling, golf, and bridge. Family was very important to Pearl and she enjoyed being a part of her grandchildren's lives.

Pearl is survived by one son, Dr. Leland (Carol) Larson; five grandchildren, Elizabeth (Philip) Hankins, Daniel (Kristen) Larson, Paul Larson, Denise (John) Haglund, Douglas (Hope) Larson; and twelve great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Leland, Sr., Pearl was preceded in death by her parents; son, Dennis and daughter-in-law, Leone; and siblings, Myrtle Sunde, Josephine Neset, Ella Rice, Millie Skari, Howard Johnson, and Lester Johnson.

Memorials may be directed to the Eventide Lutheran Home, 1405 7th St. S., Moorhead or Trinity Lutheran Church, 210 7th St. S., Moorhead, MN 56560.

Pearl's Memorial Service will be Friday, January 11, 2013, at 2:00 PM in Bottolfson Chapel, Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead. Visitation will be one hour before the service.
