Phyllis A. Hellem, 81, Moorhead, MN, died Sunday, March 1, 2009, in Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead.
Phyllis Ardell Fawcett was born December 29, 1927, to Frank and Sylvia (Monson) Fawcett in Moorhead where she grew up and graduated from high school. After graduation she worked at Northern School Supply in Fargo, ND.
On April 5, 1949, Phyllis married Arvid Hellem in Moorhead where they made their home and began raising their family. They eventually moved to Boone, IA, where Phyllis worked at the Coast to Coast store that they co-owned and operated with her brother and his wife. They then moved to Grand Forks, ND, where Arvid and Phyllis co-owned and operated the Coast to Coast store with Les and Dorraine Fawcett. Phyllis worked for fifteen years at the University of North Dakota as the secretary in the Mathematics Department and also belonged to a bowling league.
Phyllis and Arvid returned to Moorhead where she began working as a secretary for the Plant Pathology Department at NDSU. She retired in 1991 to their lake home on Kabekona Lake where she enjoyed fishing, quilting, crafting, and singing with the Kabekona Lake Choir and Hope Lutheran Church Choir in Walker, MN. Phyllis became a resident of Eventide Lutheran Home in December of 2007.
Phyllis was active in her children's lives by participating as a Cub and Boy Scout Leader and a member of the PTA. She was artistic, enjoyed many crafts, baking, and was a talented seamstress. She enjoyed Bible studies, bowling, and gathering with family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Arvid; six children, Peggy (Steven) Nelson, Coralville, IA, Donald (LeighAnn) Hellem, Whiteland, IN, Elaine (Steven) Smith, Rochester, MN, Diane (John) Hutton, Lino Lakes, MN, Robert (Cheri) Hellem, Lincoln, NE, and Ginny (Chris) Olson, Cottage Grove, MN; sixteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Lucille and Marion; and two brothers, Les and Raymond.
Visitation: Thursday from 12:30 to 1:30 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorhead.
Funeral: Thursday, March 5, 2009, at 1:30 PM, at Trinity Lutheran Church.
Interment: Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN.
