Ralph Martin "Ski" Bakkila was born on August 31, 1951, to Elmer and Faye (Brinkman) Bakkila in Fargo, ND. He grew up in Fargo and attended school there. As a teenager, Ski, worked several jobs.

After high school, he enlisted in the US Army where he served in Vietnam. Upon his return home, Ski began working for Burlington Northern Railroad as an Engineer.

For a time, Ski liked to ride his Harley. He also enjoyed carpentry work. His favorite sport was football; and watching the Minnesota Vikings play gave him many hours of enjoyment.

Ski married Deborah Hanson on June 22, 1979, in Argusville, ND. They had three children. Ski was especially proud of his children and grandchildren and their visits were precious moments to him.

Ski died on Tuesday, January 17, 2012, surrounded by his loving family at the VA Medical Center in St. Cloud, MN. He was 60 years old.

He is survived by his son, Derek (Brook) Bakkila, Fargo; daughters, Aime'e Bakkila, Fargo, and Kayla (Ves) Marinov, Parshall, ND; five grandchildren, Kamrenn Chapman, Jayden and Paityn Bakkila, Spencer Bakkila, and Tristan Marinov; the mother of his child

Visitation: Sunday, 5 - 7 PM with Prayer Service at 7 PM, Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.


Funeral: Monday, January 23, 2012, at 11 AM, First Congregational Church, Fargo.

Burial: St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Moorhead.
