Raymond Beck, 76, of Sabin, MN, died in his home on Thursday, April 24, 2014, under the care of his family and Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Raymond Edward Beck, the son of John and Florence (Restemayer) Beck, was born in Thief River Falls, MN, on July 18, 1937. He grew up in Newfolden, MN, and in Crookston, MN, where he graduated from high school in 1953.
The family moved to Sabin and Raymond began to work for William Collins and Son, doing road construction. In 1960, he joined the US Army and served overseas in Germany. After his discharge in 1962, he returned to Sabin and returned to work for William Collins and Son.
In May of 1964, Raymond met Rosemary Evans. On November 28, 1964, Raymond and Rosemary were married in Williston, ND. They made their home in Sabin, where they have lived since. In 1967, Raymond became a student at Moorhead Technical College, and in 1969, graduated as an electrical technician. After graduation, Raymond worked as an electronic technical specialist for Prairie Public Broadcasting in Fargo, ND. He retired after 24 years of service, in 1994.
Raymond was an avid fisherman and enjoyed all sorts of fishing whenever he could. He also enjoyed vegetable gardening, which he learned from his mother. He was well-known as an excellent cook and made lefse. He enjoyed singing and participated in his church choir and in the Sabin community choir. With the support of his church and AA, Raymond has remained sober for 38 years.
Raymond loved his family and enjoyed time spent with them. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Rosemary, Sabin; two sons, Patrick (Josephine) Beck, Vine Grove, Kentucky, and John Beck, Sabin; a daughter, Dawn Nelsen, Sabin; brothers, Gerald (June) Beck, Austin, Texas, and Gordon Beck, Barnesville, MN; a sister, Jean Goodro, Asheville, NC; grandchildren, Amanda (Darell) Skoy, Brianne Beck, William (Christina) Beck, Joseph (Deljohn) Beck, Rebekah Nelsen, and Madeline Nelsen; and five great-grandchildren, Noah and Scarlett Skoy, and Abigail, Hunter and Nehemiah Beck. Raymond was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Breantleh Beck; son-in-law, Bradley Nelsen; his parents; an infant brother; and a niece.
