Raymond L. Hubbard

June 27, 1925 — July 24, 2018

Raymond L Hubbard, 93, of Fargo, ND, died on Tuesday, July 24, 2018, in his home under the care of Hospice, surrounded by his family.

Raymond Leon Hubbard was born June 27, 1925, the son of Raymond L. and Alice (Carr) Hubbard, Sr., in Madison, WI. He lived with his parents in Adrian and Benton Harbor, MI, until eventually moving to Mahtomedi, MN, on the shore of White Bear Lake. He always said that it was the best place to grow up. As a high school junior, he moved with his family to Oakes, ND, where he graduated from high school.

During his senior year of high school, Ray was drafted and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He went to Hospital Corps school in San Diego, CA. He was then sent to the island of Guam for duty with Fleet Hospital 103 where he cared for patients including those from the battles of Okinawa and Iwo Jima. He was later transferred to communications and became a telephone operator.

Upon being honorably discharged from the Navy, he returned to North Dakota and attended Jamestown (ND) College. While there he met 'the most beautiful girl in the world,' Beverly Olson, and they were married on August 29, 1948, in Oakes Presbyterian Church. Ray graduated with a degree in chemistry before teaching school for one year in Ulen, MN. They moved to Fargo where he went to work for the Fargo Health Department as a bacteriologist. He attended NDSU part-time to further his education. Ray retired from the Fargo Health Department in 1987 after thirty-five years of service.

Ray was a long-time faithful member of Pontoppidan Lutheran Church in Fargo. He sang in the choir, attended numerous Bible study classes, served on boards and committees, and was a participant in the men's Honey-Do group.

Ray had many talents and hobbies, was a natural handyman, and could fix almost anything. He was athletic and musical, enjoying golfing, snow and water skiing and especially bicycle riding. He sang in quartets and played clarinet and tenor saxophone. He had been a ham radio operator. He loved spending time at the lake with his family and friends sailing, boating, and swimming.

He is survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Beverly; children, Julie Huebner and David Hubbard, both of Fargo; and grandchildren, David Huebner (Tracey Hibbard), Afton (Christian) Penner, Justine Hubbard, Jennal Hubbard, Tess Hubbard, and Jaclyn Hubbard.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Charlotte; and son-in-law, Thomas Huebner.

A Gathering of Friends for Ray will be Sunday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, with a 6:30 PM Prayer Service in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, MN.

His Memorial Service will be Monday, July 30, 2018, at 11:00 AM, in Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, Fargo.

Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Fargo.
