Reuben B. Korsmo, 90, Mayville, ND, died Saturday, October 16, 2010, in Luther Memorial Home, Mayville, ND.
Reuben Benjamin Korsmo was born on May 27, 1920, to George and Evelyn (Bilden) Korsmo, on the family farm in rural Northwood, ND. He was raised on the farm and attended rural school. He graduated from Northwood High School in 1939 and attended one year at NDSU.
Reuben was drafted into the US Army in March of 1942 as a member of the 915th Field Artillery Battalion of the 90th Division. He served nineteen months in Europe, including the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge.
He met his wife, Edith Harstad, at a picnic by the Goose River. They were married June 14, 1951, in Mayville. They farmed the Harstad family land. In the early 1960s, Reuben drove to Moorhead to help his brother, Paul, conduct funerals. In 1970, they purchased the Coast to Coast Store in Mayville, which they operated until his retirement in 1984.
Reuben was a member of the Mayville Lutheran Church, serving on the council and various boards. He served two terms on the Mayville-Portland School Board and was a life member of the Mayville VFW and American Legion. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, traveling, and for a time, he and Edith spent winters in Arizona. They moved to an assisted living apartment at Sun Center South, Luther Memorial Home in July 2005.
Reuben was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Edith, Mayville; a son, Neil (Chris) Korsmo, West Branch, Iowa; a daughter, Jane (Bob) Winter, Grand Forks, ND; grandsons, Timothy Winter and Craig (Stephanie) Winter, both Grand Forks; and Katrina Korsmo, West Branch, Iowa; two brothers, Philip Korsmo, Northwood, and Paul (Florence) Korsmo, Fargo, ND; a sister, Korinne (David) Smith, Grand Forks; a sister-in-law, Gudrun Harstad, Mayville; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
