James Richard Peterson, the son of Edward and Minnie (Mattson) Peterson, was born in the Audubon, MN, area on July 3, 1922. He graduated from high school in Detroit Lakes, MN, in 1940. Jim served three years with the 5th Marine Division in the Pacific arena during WWII.
Jim was married to Elizabeth "Libby" Wenberg on June 4, 1947, in International Falls, MN. He graduated in 1948 from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN, and from Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN, in 1952.
Jim was ordained at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes. His first parish was Nome, ND. He also served in Holt, Cook, and Blackduck in Minnesota; and Towner, Williston, and Minot, in North Dakota. In 1994, Jim and Libby moved to Colorado. Libby died July 1, 1997.
On September 28, 2002, Jim was married to Lois Guenthner. They lived in Parker, Colorado, and later in Aurora, CO.
Rev. James R. Peterson, died on Friday, September 9, 2005, in Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, CO, at the age of 83. He had a passion for life and serving others. He loved and was very proud of his family, who all miss him dearly as a husband, dad, and grandpa. He enjoyed building birdhouses, chairs and tables. He also loved watching the moon. It was common to catch him humming or whistling a hymn or visiting with clerks at the grocery store or someone he met on a walking path.
Jim is survived by his second wife, Lois; two sons, Jim (Bev) Peterson, and Tom (Bev) Peterson; four daughters, Nancy (Jerry) Sjostrand, Debbie (Steve) Gibson, Sara (Mark) Cheney, and Annette (John) Haman; a sister, Irene Oien; five stepchildren, Jeanenne Bennett, Tim (Vicki) Guenthner, Jacquie (Jeff) Anderson, Melanie (Mark) DeYoung, and Craig (Havens) Guenthner; 20 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Memorials preferred to St. Peter's Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.
Visitation: Thursday, 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church.
