Rev. Robert L. Anderson, Moorhead, MN, died March 30, 2011, in ManorCare Health Services in Fargo, ND. He was 85.
Bob was born January 18, 1926, in Morris, IL, to H. Vernon and Ellen (Amundson) Anderson. He grew up and attended schools in Morris. His education at Concordia College, where he was on the basketball team, was interrupted by US Army service in Italy during World War II. He graduated from Concordia in 1949 and from Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, MN, before being ordained into Lutheran ministry in 1952.
He married Selma Berge on August 28, 1948. She also had grown up in Morris and attended Concordia with Bob.
Rev. Anderson served churches in Cameron, WI, Mitchell, SD, St. Paul, MN, Moorhead (Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd 1970-85), and in Kenosha, WI. Upon his retirement in 1995, the couple returned to Moorhead, and Bob was a part-time or interim pastor at Olivet, St. John and Hope Lutheran (1998-2007) churches in Fargo.
Bob was known for his strong preaching voice and gentleness with parishioners. He contributed to many devotional booklets and published a book of Lenten sermons, Crossroads of Lent. Luther Seminary honored him with the "Faithfulness in Ministry Cross" in 1995 for his urban and suburban ministry work.
In whatever community the family lived, Bob was active, not only in his church, but also in community affairs. In Fargo-Moorhead, for example, he was a board member of Hospice of Red River Valley, the Clay-Wilkin Opportunity Council and the Concordia Alumni Association. He was a charter member and past president of Vikingland Kiwanis and president of the Moorhead Ministerium.
In 1973 Bob and Selma purchased a lake cabin on Big Cormorant Lake that became a source of pride and joy and a gathering place for children and grandchildren. He closely followed the Vikings and Twins, as well as Concordia and Moorhead High School teams.
Bob is survived by his wife of 62 years, Selma, Moorhead; a brother, William Anderson, Cedar Rapids, IA; daughter, Deborah (Laan) Dommer, Red Wing, MN, their children, Andrew, Elisabeth and Danelle; and four sons: David (Diane) Anderson of New Brighton, M
