Richard A. VanderMeulen Sr.

October 9, 1925 — December 18, 2011

Richard Alfred VanderMeulen Sr. was married for 64 loving years, served his country in WWII and Korea, and raised a deeply devoted and caring family.

Dick was born October 9, 1925, in Ann Arbor, MI, to Alfred and Violet (Love) VanderMeulen. He was raised in Flint, MI, and where he graduated from Flint Central High School.

After he graduated, Dick entered the US Navy serving during WWII. He remained in the Navy Reserves and attended Tulane University, New Orleans, LA, for a few years before he returned to serve in Korea. After the Korean conflict, he finished his Indusrial Engineering degree at Wayne State University.

Dick married Edith May Place on August 24, 1947, in Flint, and he worked for National Twist Drill and Tool Company as an engineer in Detroit, MI. He was then transferred to San Francisco, CA in 1954, where he began working for Sperry Gyroscope.

In 1963 the family moved to the Washington, DC area where Dick began working for Rockwell. He was again transferred to Dayton, OH, in 1976, and then to Long Beach, CA, in 1987. Dick retired from Rockwell in 1990 as the regional vice president of marketing. Dick and Edith made their retirement home in San Luis Obispo, CA, until moving to Redmond, WA, in 2003 and then settling in Fargo, ND, in 2008.

Dick was a very generous man who shared his time, talent, and treasure with anyone in need. He was very handy and could fix almost anything from cars to appliances. He and Edith enjoyed playing tennis together for many years and also enjoyed long walks.
Dick died on Sunday, December 18, 2011, at Sheyenne Crossings, West Fargo, ND, at the age of eighty-six.
