Robert Allen Bakken, 84, Moorhead, MN, died Friday, June 6, 2008, in Eventide Lutheran Home.
The son of Theodore and Nora (Larson) Bakken, Robert ("Bob") was born October 21, 1923 in Stanley, ND. He grew up in the Berthold, ND area and graduated from high school in 1942. He served his country in the US Marine Corps from January of 1945 to August of 1946, stationed overseas in Guam.
After his discharge, he returned to North Dakota, where he graduated from Minot (ND) State Teacher's College in 1950. On June 17, 1951, Bob was united in marriage to Gereldene Schultz at Omemee, ND. They lived in the Stanley, ND area for six years, where he taught school. In 1957 they moved to Esko, MN where Bob was a high school science teacher. He continued his education at Bemidji (MN) State University and the University of Minnesota, Duluth, where he received his master's degree in 1974. From 1969 until his retirement in 1986 Bob served as principal of the high school in Wrenshall, MN. Bob was a dedicated educator, and touched the lives of many students during his career.
Bob was a member of the Cloquet Kiwanis Club, where he served as club president in 1978-1979 and District Lt. Governor in 1988-1989. He was active in Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Cloquet, MN. He also served as the regional representative for the Minnesota State High School League for many years. In retirement, Bob and Geri spent winters in Venice, Florida, and would return to Minnesota for the summer. Bob was known for being a "people person" and for thinking of the needs of others. Besides playing a mean game of cards, he was also avid golfer, scoring two "holes in one." In May of 2005, they moved to Moorhead and Bob became a resident of Eventide Lutheran Home.
