Robert "Bob" Hellem

Robert E. Hellem, 83, of Moorhead, MN, died Monday, April 27, 2015, in Maryhill Manor, Enderlin, ND.
Robert Eugene Hellem was born December 27, 1931, the son of Oscar and Eva (Sethney) Hellem, in Moorhead. He lived with his family in Moorhead until they moved to Oakland, CA, where he graduated from high school in 1949. Robert then worked for Montgomery Ward and also played baseball in the San Francisco area. In 1952, he joined the U.S. Marines, serving on the frontline infantry while in Korea.
After his discharge, Robert moved to Fargo, ND, and went to work for the Fargo Police Department. On April 30, 1954, he was united in marriage to Marlys Bjerke in Fargo. They lived in Fargo and later moved to Moorhead.
Robert then went back to school at Moorhead State University where he received his Bachelor of Education. He taught History at Moorhead North Junior High for twenty-five years, spending his last seven years at the new Moorhead Junior High, retiring in 1988. After retirement, Robert and Marlys wintered in Arizona where he supervised student teachers from the University of Northern Arizona for nine years.
He was a member of The Lutheran Church of Christ the King, the American Legion, VFW, and was an active member of the Minnesota Education Association. Robert was an avid Minnesota Twins fan and enjoyed bicycling.
Robert is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marlys; children, Scott Hellem, Moorhead, Mark (Shirley) Hellem, St. Paul, MN, and Karen Hellem, Moorhead; and grandsons, Anders and Nick.
He was preceded in death by his parents and infant son, Ryan.

A Visitation for Robert will be Thursday from 5 PM until 7 PM in Korsmo Funeral Service, Moorhead.
His Funeral Service will be Friday, May 1, 2015, at 2 PM in The Lutheran Church of Christ the King, Moorhead.
Burial will take place in Riverside Cemetery, Moorhead.
