Robert Carroll Swanson was born January 3, 1921, in Fargo, ND, to Carroll and Alice (Abbott) Swanson. He was raised in the Fargo area where he attended school.
Bob moved to Monterey, CA, and entered the US Army on December 9, 1942. Bob received training as a paratrooper at Fort Benning, GA, and served in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge during that time. Bob served in a reconnaissance platoon as a radio telephone operator with the 17th Airborne Division. He was discharged January 10, 1946, as a Sergeant, with the 82nd Airborne Division.
Bob was united in marriage to Myrtle Wenner on January 3, 1948, at Ulen, MN, and they made their home in Moorhead, MN. Bob worked as a delivery driver for Advanced United Truck Line until he retired in 1986. He volunteered tirelessly at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Fargo, until November of 2001.
Bob was very active in the VFW and the American Legion. He served as the Ceremonial Officer for many years and was a Past Commander of the VFW. Bob served as the Seam Squirrel for the Military Order of the Cooties in Moorhead. Bob was a dedicated worker in many endeavors for as long as he was able.
Bob died peacefully, in the presence of his family, on Friday, September 24, 2010, at Golden Living Center, Moorhead. He was eighty-nine years of age.
Bob is survived by his wife, Myrtle, Moorhead; five sons, Rocky (Bonnie) Swanson and Mike (Victoria) Swanson, both Fargo, Terry (Becky) Swanson, Horace, ND, Randy (Lisa) Swanson, Zimmerman, MN, and Chad Swanson, Burnesville, MN; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Gerald (Carol) Chamberlain, West Fargo, ND.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Floreine; brothers, Bruce and Donald; and step-father, Harold Chamberlain.
Visitation for Bob will be Monday, September 27, 2010, from 5 - 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
His funeral will be Tuesday, September 28, 2010, at 11 AM, in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Moorhead.
Burial, with full military honors, will be in Moorhead Memorial Gardens.
