Robert Jerome Nelson died Sunday, January 23, 2005, at seventy-seven years of age. He passed peacefully, surrounded by his family, at MeritCare Palliative Care Unit, Fargo, ND.
Robert was born January 30, 1927, to Carl and Katherine (Schibsted) Nelson, in Perley, MN. He was baptized and confirmed in Kirkebo Lutheran Church, Perley. Robert attended elementary school in Perley and graduated from high school in Hendrum, MN.
Robert entered the US Army on July 20, 1945, and served until January 16, 1947. Following his discharge, Robert returned to the Perley area and married Evelyn Volness on June 26, 1948, in Perley. They lived and farmed in the Perley area. Robert was also a self-employed contractor and carpenter for many years.
Robert was a man of few words but had a quick wit about him. He was a quiet man who took immense pride in his carpentry work and skills. All of Robert's family have benefited from his talents because his family and work were his life. If you ever wondered where to find Robert, you just had to look in his shop where he could be found puttering around. He will be dearly missed by all that knew him.
Robert is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Evelyn; four sons: David Nelson of Fargo, and his two children, Adam (Stephanie) Nelson and their daughter, Brynn, and Tony Nelson; son, Jim (Glenda) Nelson of West Fargo, ND, and their three children, Jason (Shawn) Nelson and their son, Tavian, and Andrea and Amanda Nelson; son, Jeff (Lee Ann) Nelson of Perley, and their two children, Matt (Angie) Nelson and Mike Nelson; and son, Darin (Stacy) Nelson of Perley, and their three children, Logan, Lexi, and Lauren Nelson; two brothers, Edwin (Ellen) Nelson and George (Betty) Nelson, both of Perley; and one sister, Frances Aabye, of Moorhead, MN.
His parents and one granddaughter, Allison Kay Nelson, preceded Robert in death.
Visitation for Robert will be Wednesday, January 26, 2005, from 5 - 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. His funeral will be Thursday, January 27, 2005, at 2 PM, in Kirkebo Lutheran Church, Perley. Burial will follow in Kirkebo Lutheran Cemetery.
