Roger DuWayne Balgaard, the son of Melvin and Gladys (Bergen) Balgaard, was born April 3, 1936, in Evansville, MN. He grew up and received his education in Evansville, where he graduated from high school in 1954, and then went on to attend Wapheton State School of Science in Wapheton, ND. He also served his country in the US Army for four years.
On February 24, 1962, Roger married Helene Christensen at St. James United Church of Christ in Barnesville, MN. Following their marriage, they moved to and raised a family in Dilworth, MN. Roger worked for Halmrast Custodial Company, and as a custodian at Oak Grove Lutheran School in Fargo, ND, retiring in approximately 1999. Roger liked to walk, ride his bike, volunteer at his church, travel with his children, care for his flower garden, and collect telephone pole insulators, which he converted into beautiful candle-holders.
In February 2011, Roger and Helene moved to Rochester, MN, first to live with their children and later to live in Sunrise Cottages of Rochester. Roger died there on Wednesday, January 11, 2012, at the age of 75 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Elvina Schroeder.
Roger is survived by his wife, Helene, of Rochester; daughter and son, Barbara and DuWayne Balgaard, both of Fountain Hills, AZ; five brothers, Marvin (Audrey), Luverne (Cynthia), Truman, Dennis (Joanne), and Ronald (Juanita) Balgaard; a sister, Beverly (Robert) Bonkoski; brothers-in-law, William Schroeder, and Wesley (Etta Mae) Christensen; and sisters-in-law, Bonnie (Wayne) Tucker, and Janice Christensen.

Funeral: Wednesday, January 18, 2012, at 11 AM, Dilworth Lutheran Church, Dilworth, MN.
Burial: Mound Grove Cemetery, Evansville, MN.
