Roger L. Monson

Roger Leland Monson, the son of Thomas and Blenda (Shuley) Monson, was born August 27, 1927, in Edinburg, ND, where he grew up and received his education. Roger served his country in the US Navy, during WW II. He served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Wasp, and saw duty in the Pacific. After his discharge, he returned to Grand Forks, ND.
On June 27, 1950, Roger married Laurette Benoit in Olga, ND. They made their home in Grand Forks, and later in Wahpeton, ND, where Roger attended the North Dakota State School of Science. After his graduation, the family moved to Cooperstown, ND, where Roger worked for the local newspaper as a printer. In 1964, the family moved to Grafton, ND, where Roger worked for the Walsh County Record Newspaper. Later, they returned to Grand Forks, where Roger worked for many years for the Grand Forks Herald. He retired in 1993.
In 1998, the couple moved to Dilworth, MN, where they have lived since. For more than 10 years, Roger and Laurette have been spending their winters in Mesa, AZ. Roger enjoyed walking and playing racquetball. He also was very interested in computers and watching Fox News.
Roger died at a hospital in Mesa, on December 15, 2009, at the age of 82. In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by three brothers, Tom, Bob and Ronald; and two sisters, Neva and Bette.
Roger is survived by his wife, Laurette, Dilworth; five sons, Roger (Barb) Monson Jr., Brookings, SD, Timothy (Cheryl) Monson, Moorhead, MN, Mark Monson, Las Vegas, NV, Brian (Luisa) Monson, Escondido, CA, and Michael (Beth Weik) Monson, Moorhead; a daughter, Marcia (David) Wester, Lubbock, TX; sister, Judy (Ray) Spangle; 10 grandchildren, Phillip and Andrea, Nicholas and Matthew, Tasha and Krystal, Jessica and Lucas; and Lindsey and Emily; and 6 great-grandchildren.
