Roy Erland Frydenlund, the son of Jorgen and Marie (Miller) Frydenlund, was born in Nome, ND, on August 7, 1920. He grew up and received his schooling in Nome. As a young man, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, in the North Dakota Peace Garden, and at Mud Lake Game Refuge, Middle River, MN.

During WW II, Roy served his country in the army with the Military Intelligence Division of the Signal Corp in the Pacific.

He was discharged after the war, returned to Nome, and then moved to Valley City, ND, where he met Erna L. Zaun. They were united in marriage on May 7, 1950, in Valley City and resided there for a short time before moving to Moorhead.

Roy's employment included working for Dan Dugan Trucking, followed by 30 years at Northern Propane in Moorhead, from where he retired in 1982.

Roy's lifelong hobby of photography won him many awards. He and his wife spent many hours exploring the outdoors and nature to capture the wonders they were able to see. Roy taught his daughters from an early age to love nature and continued to teach hundreds of youth in our area his insights by giving nature walks and talks at the MSUM Regional Science Center. He showed his devotion to youth by being a Fire Arms Safety Instructor for 40 years. Everyone who met him quickly recognized his intelligence and quick wit. His belief in life-long learning was evidenced by his corresponding by email, researching on the internet, listening to his favorite old tunes on YouTube, and keeping up with his children and grandchildren on Facebook while at Villa Maria.

Roy's wife, Erna, died April 12, 2012. After her death, he continued to live in Moorhead. He recently became a resident of Villa Maria, Fargo, ND, where he died on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at the age of 92.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Donald, Earl and Marvin Frydenlund; and two sisters, Dora Brendmoen and Alice Hovde.

Roy is survived by his two loving daughters, Paulette (Dan) Carlson, Dassel, MN, and Fern (Mike Haring) Elofson, Fargo; five grandchildren, Lindsey (Brian) Bessingpass, Terri (Paul) Bly, Bryce (Emily) Carlson, Rachel Elofson, and Heidi (Brian) Prendergast; eleven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Francis (Doug) Fischer, Renton, WA.
