Ruby Agnes Crane, the daughter of Arthur and Mae Crane, was born in Devils Lake, ND, on April 23, 1923. She grew up and received her education in the Brinsmade area until the family moved in 1937 to Minnewaukan, ND, where she graduated from high school.
During World War II, Ruby served her country in the US Coast Guard. She served in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Seattle, WA. She was discharged in 1946 as a Yeoman 1st class.
On September 29, 1947, Ruby married Elmer L. Stein, in Devils Lake, ND. Elmer worked as a manager for grain elevators, and the family lived in a number of towns including Kathryn, Sharon, Aneta and Rolette, ND and Wolf Point, MT. In 1983, the couple retired to rural Moorhead, MN, and in about 1993, they moved to Dilworth, MN.
Ruby died at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, ND, on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2006, at the age of 83. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and three sisters.
Ruby is survived by four children, Eleanor Stein of Englewood, CO, Roger (Jennifer) Stein, Fargo, ND, Elaine Stein of Blaine, MN, and James (Arlyn) Stein of Wasilla, Alaska; two sisters, Miriam (Paul) Anderson of Mukilteo, WA and Shirley (Don) Metz of Ventura, CA; and by six grandchildren.
