Russel W. Thiel

March 3, 1925 — October 31, 2007

Russel Wayne Thiel was born March 3, 1925, to Carl and Clara (Holte) Thiel, in Valley City, ND. The family moved to the Grygla, MN, area and he attended school in Goodrich, MN.
Russel began work for American Crystal Sugar, in East Grand Forks, MN, until he entered the US Army in December of 1944. Russel served in the Philippines during the Asiatic Pacific Theater and was discharged in November of 1946. He returned to East Grand Forks where he resumed working for American Crystal Sugar.
Russel married Delorice Johnson on January 1, 1949, in East Grand Forks, where they made their home. Over the course of thirty-five years, Russel worked for American Crystal Sugar in East Grand Forks, Mason City, IA, Crookston, MN, and Moorhead, MN. He retired in 1982, as plant manager of the Hillsboro mill.
Russel then began part-time sales work for Mazer Chemical, which eventually became PPG. He retired in 1995 when they lived in Bemidji, MN. Russel and Delorice moved to Fargo, ND, in 1998. Russel died suddenly, at his Fargo home, on Wednesday, October 31, 2007, at eighty-two years of age.
Russel was a member of the American Legion as well as the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an avid outdoorsman with a passion for hunting and fishing.
Russel is survived by his wife, Delorice, Fargo; one daughter, Linda Ritter, Fargo; four sons, Gary (Cindy), Washburn, ND, David (Linda), Bovey, MN, Kevin (Julie), Alexandria, MN, and Bruce (Fay), Waynesville, OH; eleven grandchildren; one great-grandchil
Russel was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Vernon; sister, Blanche; and a granddaughter, Amanda.
Visitation for Russel will be Wednesday, November 7, 2007, from 5 - 7 PM in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
The funeral will be Thursday, November 8, 2007, at 2 PM, in the Korsmo Chapel.
