Ruth A. Synstelien, 80, Moorhead, MN, died Wednesday, July 30, 2008, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.
Ruth Ann Bratland, the daughter of Arthur and Emma (Jensen) Bratland, was born December 8, 1927, at her parents' farm home in Ransom County, ND. Ruth grew up in the Lisbon area. She attended Hanson Consolidated School, and schools in Engelvale, Verona and Lisbon, where she graduated from high school in 1944. While attending Fargo Business College in 1944-45, she worked for room and board at the J.S. Cook residence in South Fargo.
On June 5, 1949, Ruth married Olin Synstelien at Dalton, MN. They lived in an apartment in South Moorhead until moving to Minot in 1954 where they purchased their first new house in 1959. In 1962 they moved to their second new house in Hutchinson, MN. They moved back to Moorhead in 1964 and rented a house on Elm Street. On December 20, 1968, they purchased a new home in south Moorhead where they raised their family.
From 1945 to 1954, Ruth worked in Fargo for the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York. After moving to Minot in 1954, she worked for the Truax-Traer Coal Company, the VA Hospital, and the 32d USAF Hospital. Following a respite from work and raising two children (1961-77), she worked as secretary-bookkeeper for Paul Horn Farms., Inc. Moorhead until 1985.
Ruth loved to care for her flowers. She was an avid reader and especially enjoyed poetry. Most importantly, she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her four grandsons were the favorite part of her life.
Ruth is survived by her husband, Olin of Moorhead; sons, Larry (Joan), Chanhassen, MN, and Michael, Moorhead; four grandsons, Alec, Justin, Braden and Garrett; sister, Shirley Busche, Fargo; and brother, Arthur Roy (Ann) Bratland, Yorkville, IL. She was
