Sylvester Jonathan Backer was born September 12, 1941, in Breckenridge, MN, to Sylvester and Marjory (Spicer) Backer. Jon was raised in Hankinson, ND, where he graduated from high school in 1959.
Jon entered the US Army in February of 1960 and was stationed in Taiwan, where he had the distinction of meeting Chiang Kai-shek. After his discharge in February of 1963, Jon attended barber college in Omaha, NE. He barbered in Harlan, IA, for one year.
Jon married Donna Lampert on July 11, 1968, at Rock Island, IL. They returned to Harlan, in 1972, where they owned and operated the theater. Jon worked for the Rock Island Railroad from 1973 until 1977, when they moved to Dilworth, MN. Jon worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad , as an engineer, until he retired in 2007.
Jon died Sunday, March 6, 2011, at Sanford Health, Fargo, at sixty-nine years of age.
Jon and Donna were blessed with a granddaughter, Vivian Goos, in 2002. Jon enjoyed babysitting Vivian whenever he could. He also enjoyed spending time at their cottage on Otter Tail Lake.
Jon is survived by his wife, Donna, Dilworth; two daughters, Pamela Backer, and Angela (Backer) Goos, both Fargo; granddaughter, Vivian M. Goos; and a sister, Dixie (Al) Woodraska, Harlan.
Jon was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Claris Conkling.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
Visitation for Jon will be Thursday, March 10, 2011, from 5 - 7 PM, in Dilworth Lutheran Church, Dilworth.
A Celebration Service will be Thursday at 6:30 PM, in the church.
