Sharon Kay Correll was born May 22, 1958, in Moorhead, MN. Under the loving care of her group home staff and along with Hospice of the Red River Valley, Sharon died peacefully on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at her home, at the age of 64.
Sharon’s special needs were apparent from birth but the reasons for it were not. She was raised with her sisters and brothers in rural Moorhead, included in all family activities, and while she could not participate mentally or verbally in the games & play, she knew what tickled her funny bone and was often brought to tears with laughter at the antics that surrounded her. She particularly loved the family’s old player piano and would demand “Sing! Sing!” until the rolls were tattered and worn.
She went to the Children’s Harbor School in Moorhead in which her mother was active for many years beyond Sharon’s attendance. When her mother returned to the workforce as Sharon was becoming an adult, Sharon started a life through group homes and caregivers. As she was unable to communicate clearly, it is hoped that most of those experiences were good ones. Her last few years were under the care of Lutheran Social Services of Minnesota, and she spent her weekdays with activities at Heartland Adult Life Programs in Moorhead. Sharon loved hand crafts, puzzles, paging through endless magazines, and country music. She looked forward every day to her coffee & cookie breaks and watching staff members cook meals.
Sharon is survived by her sister, Marlys Franck of Fargo, ND, brother, Dennis (Melanie) Correll of West Fargo, ND, sister Sandy Hansen of Valley City, ND, and brother, Dave (Ann Meillier) Correll of Faribault, MN; plus many nieces & nephews and grand-nieces & nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Merle & Arlene Correll; brothers-in-law, Steve Franck and Scott Hansen; and nephew, Nathan Hansen.
The family wishes to express gratitude to the many personal care assistants who provided employment coaching, daily cares, and life enrichment for Sharon over the years. Sharon was a gentle soul – innocent, loving and forgiving – and will remain forever young.
In the song lyrics of her favorite singer, Donna Fargo – “You're my somebody special and you know just because of you sometimes I even feel like I'm somebody special, too."
