Shirlee Beverly Mattson was born August 30, 1930, to Hilbert and Christine (Bernhardson) Mattson, in Fargo, ND. She was raised in Comstock, MN, where she graduated from high school in 1948. She attended Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, MN, Moorhead (MN) State College, and the University of Wisconsin, River Falls, WI. She taught elementary school in Sauk Centre, MN, for two years.
Shirlee was married on December 22, 1952, to Marlow Davidson, in the original Bethesda Lutheran Church, Moorhead. They lived in Detroit Lakes, MN, from 1954 - 1959, and then moved to Grand Forks, ND, for one year. In 1960, they moved to Inver Grove Heights, MN. They lived there until 1988, when they returned to their "home country" in Moorhead. On August 20, 2006, at seventy-five years of age, Shirlee left a world of pain to be at peace with her Lord.
Family and friends were at the heart of all she did, especially for her "second mothers", Verna and Selma. She was very proud of her Swedish heritage. Her ancestors filed land claims in Clay County in 1877. Of course she laughed at Swedish jokes and countered with Norwegian jokes.
Other than the birth of her children and two granddaughters, one of the highlights of her life was to go to the region of her ancestors in Sweden where she danced to the midsummer's Maypole. Shirlee loved getting letters and phone calls from family and friends, and was disappointed with people in today's society that do not understand the simple art and courtesy of a phone call or handwritten note.
Shirlee is survived by her husband, Marlow, Moorhead; two daughters, Dawn (Joseph) McNulty, Colorado Springs, CO, and Darcee (Jens) Hoj, St. Paul, MN; two granddaughters, Faith and Anne McNulty; two sisters, Marlys Gaugler, and Vivian (Walter) Stenson, both Moorhead; and nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Shirlee was preceded in death by a son, Dwight; and sisters, Hazel Kjesboe and Edith Israelson.
A Memorial Service for Shirlee will be Thursday, August 24, 2006, at 1 PM, in Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Moorhead.
Inurnment will take place in South St. Paul, MN.
