Sigmund Oland, 82, Dilworth, MN, passed away Tuesday, October 26, 2010, at Rosewood on Broadway, Fargo, ND.
Sig was born in Hanks, ND, on May 19, 1928. The family moved to Hibbing, MN, in 1938. After high school, Sig enlisted in the US Army and served in Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1948. On return from the service, Sig worked two years in an apprentice carpentry program in Hibbing, and continued as a master carpenter until 1964.
Sig was united in marriage to Elaine Barke, September 13, 1952, in Chisholm, MN. They moved to Dilworth in 1963. Sig worked as a salesman for Dakota Brick, Pella Windows, and Victor H. Leeby Company in Fargo, until retiring in 1992.
Sig was known for his strength of character and ethics. Having to move around as a youngster made him no stranger to challenges and hard work. In the past few years, his body could not keep up with the determination that his mind had, and he had to learn to take life at a different pace. He requested of his family, "Keep doing what we've always done together, because I will always be with you. Death ends a life, not a relationship."
Sig was a member of the Dilworth Lions, Moorhead American Legion, West Fargo VFW, and FM Curling Club.
Sig is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Elaine, Dilworth; four children, Sharon (Roger) DiBrito, Florence, MT, Diane (Jon) Hauglid, Dilworth, Eivind (Charisse) Oland, Pewaukee, WI, and Nathan (Kathy) Oland, Owatonna, MN; eleven grandchildren; ei
