Sonya M. Hansen, 45, of Moorhead, MN, passed away Tuesday, January 14, 2024, in her home and surrounded by her family, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. 

Sonya Marie Francis was born August 8, 1979. The daughter of Scott and Mary (Hoeschen) Francis in Detroit Lakes, MN. Raised in Detroit Lakes, Sonya graduated from Detroit Lakes High School, and her involvement in office work in local city offices during high school inspired her pursuit of an accounting degree from Minnesota State University Moorhead. During her college years, she also found joy continuing to play the clarinet. 

Sonya’s life took a beautiful turn when she met David Hansen during her time at college. They were married on June 23, 2001, and together they built a warm loving home in Moorhead, welcoming two daughters, Paige and Kaycee, into their family. Sonya balanced her career as an accountant with her primary role as a devoted mother, providing unwavering support in their pursuits. 

Family was the cornerstone of Sonya’s life. Her deepest passion was nurturing her loved ones, and she wholeheartedly supported Paige in music and theatre and Kaycee in Gymnastics and Diving. As David developed his fine woodworking skills, Sonya would envision creations that he would bring to life, such as a shelf, a cabinet or a bed. She also enjoyed moments snuggling on the couch with her various cats and dogs over the years. But above all, her love for her husband and daughters were her reason for living on this earth. 

Sonya also cherished time outdoors and particularly enjoyed riding on the pontoon. She also delighted in building a Christmas Village using Lego kits, expanding it each year adding accessories and enhancing the charm of the houses. Later, she would discover the joy of Diamond Art, where she created beautiful pictures and landscapes.

Most importantly it was Sonya’s unwavering faith in her Lord, who was a guiding light throughout her life. 

She will be deeply missed by her husband, David; daughters, Paige and Kaycee; parents, Scott and Mary Francis; sister, Sarah (Kyle) Olson and nephew, Lars; grandmother, Gloria Francis, father and mother-in-law, Ralph and DeeAnne Hansen; sisters-in-law, Vicki (Phil) Huck, and nieces Anna and Olivia, and Lisa (Nolan) Oliver and nephews, Riley and Koen, as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. 

A Visitation for Sonya will begin at 12:00 PM, Saturday, January 18, 2025, followed by her Funeral Service at 1:00 PM in The Lutheran Church of Christ the King, Moorhead.
