Stephen Evander Nelson, the son of Evander and Delight (Stockton) Nelson, was born in Bismarck, ND, on October 29, 1941. He died at the age of 62 years on Thursday, February 19th, 2004, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, ND.
Stephen grew up and received his education in Bismarck, where he graduated from Bismarck High School in 1959. He attended Bismarck Junior College and Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, where he graduated in 1963. On August 28, 1965, Stephen was united in marriage to Kathy Fix, in Bismarck. In 1967, the family moved to Moorhead, MN, where they have lived ever since.
Stephen was a high school English teacher. He taught in Garrison, ND ('63-'65), Bemidji, MN ('65-'67), Wahpeton, ND ('67-'69), and Glyndon - Felton, MN ('69 - '92). Stephen was an avid music lover and collector. For many years, Stephen hosted the "Old Time Music Show" on Prairie Public Radio. This program featured blue-grass and old-time country music. Steve was a huge sports fan and loved to read as well. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and cherished the little things in life.
Those grateful for having shared his life are his wife and best friend, Kathy, Moorhead; son, Christopher and daughter, Naomi, both, Fargo; brother, David (Linda Wiley) Nelson, Grand Forks, ND; sister, Margaret (Richard) Braun, Rochester, MN; an aunt, Alice Nelson, Pelican Rapids, MN; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Caroline and Raymond Butler, Mandan, ND; brother-in-law, Ray Butler, Grand Forks; sister-in-law, Sandy (Alex) Neigum, Mandan; seven nieces and nephews, and a host of special friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Stephen would end his radio program with, "Keep on the sunny side, so long for now."
