Viola Jean Rodenkirck was born August 2, 1918, to Irving and Bertha (Ewald) Marston in Pierpont, SD. She and her family later lived in Howard, SD, where she graduated from school in 1936.
After Jean graduated, she studied cosmetology in Omaha, NE. She ran her own beauty shop in Hayti, SD. Jean later became an executive secretary for the Mobil Oil Company. She worked a number of years in Aberdeen, SD, and then transferred to Fargo, ND, where she met and married John Rodenkirck. They were married November 10, 1962, in Fargo.
They moved to Encinitas, CA, where they owned and operated a Mobil Oil Station until they retired. In 2009, they returned to Fargo.
Jean passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 28, 2012, at Sanford Health, Fargo, at ninety-four years of age.
Jean will be remembered fondly by her nieces and nephews, who as youngsters were always excited when Aunt Jean came to visit them on the farm. She entertained them with the stories of her many travels while she treated the girls to haircuts, perms and manicures.
Jean loved her flower gardens and plants. She traveled extensively, spending time with her sister, Marie and her family, as well as with John's family. She also enjoyed puzzles and needlework. Jean was active in her church in California.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; her sister, Marie Jorgenson; and an infant sister, Vivian. She is survived by her nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Helen Shirley, Fargo.
Visitation will be Friday, November 2, 2012, from 11 AM to 12 noon, at First Lutheran Church, Fargo.
Her funeral will be Friday at 12 noon, in the chapel of First Lutheran Church.
Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Fargo.
Memorials are preferred to Sheyenne Crossings Memory Care Unit, West Fargo, ND.
